ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø California FAQs

ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø California is about 35 miles from Pittsburgh and is the closest ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø campus to the city. Students get a true campus experience while staying connected to internships, employers, sports, entertainment and culture across southwestern Pennsylvania.

Yes. Commuter students can join clubs, attend events, use dining and recreation spaces, cheer on the Vulcans and take part in campus traditions. California offers ways for students to stay connected whether they live on campus or commute.

Every ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø campus offers affordable education, real-world programs, personal support and a future within reach. California brings that promise to life through connected energy — an active residential campus, Vulcan pride, student involvement and access to the Pittsburgh region.

The California campus has deep roots in southwestern Pennsylvania. Founded in 1852 as California Academy, the campus has served generations of students and communities through more than 170 years of change, growth and opportunity.

Many first-year students live on campus as part of the residential experience. Incoming undergraduate students are generally required to live in university housing for four consecutive semesters unless they qualify to commute from a parent or guardian’s home within the approved distance. For California, the commuting distance guideline is within 50 miles of campus.

The Elmo Natali Student Center is one of the main gathering places on campus, with space for meals, snacks, studying, relaxing between classes and accessing student services. It also includes student organization spaces that help make it a hub for campus involvement. On warmer days, students also like to hang out on the Quad.

Students have access to the Herron Recreation and Fitness Center, which includes cardio and strength equipment, an indoor jogging track, swimming pool, basketball and racquetball courts, and the Vulcans Peak climbing wall. Campus Recreation also offers intramurals, sports clubs and outdoor recreation opportunities.
