About Me
Bryan Crable, PhD is an Associate Professor of Microbiology and Cell & Molecular Biology at Pennsylvania Western University and serves as Co-Director of the Interdisciplinary Pre-Health Committee. His 20-year career spans environmental microbiology, bacterial physiology, microbial biotechnology, and science education, with experience across eight institutions on three continents.
Dr. Crable’s research focuses on developing accessible and modular approaches to studying microbial systems in complex environments. Trained in systems biology, he has adapted his work to a primarily undergraduate, teaching-focused institution by emphasizing innovation in resource-conscious settings. His laboratory integrates microbial physiology with practical automation strategies to design scalable tools and workflows that support high-throughput experimentation without reliance on large research infrastructures.
He earned his PhD from the University of Oklahoma and has held prior research and teaching appointments at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the University of Scranton. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Lake Lacawac Foundation. In 2010, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to the Netherlands.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Crable is an accomplished highland bagpiper, with performance experience across North America and Europe.
